The Iron Man Match – The Forgotten Match

Posted by

After years of fans only seeing Iron Man matches at WWF house shows, the first televised WWF Iron Man Match was arguably the greatest of all time. At Wrestlemania 12, Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels wrestled for just under 62 minutes in a match that saw Shawn Michaels win his first WWF Championship.

Since then, the WWE has seen 8 subsequent Iron Man matches, with the likes of HHH, Kurt Angle, Brock Lesnar, John Cena and Randy Orton involved in some legendary matches. But since the last Iron Man match, a 6-5 win for Cena against Orton at Bragging Rights 2009, we have seen an abundance of in-ring talent who could potentially put on some of the best matches ever seen on International television.

So why has the WWE waited nearly four years, and to be honest, the wait may go on, to hold another Iron Man Match?

I can’t actually think of any kind of explanation, so instead, I’m going to discuss matches that could take place, and under what situation they could take place.

60 Minutes

Arguably the two wrestlers at the top of the card with the most impressive in-ring skills, the feud these two men had in the middle of CM Punk’s 434 day WWE Championship reign was one of the best we have seen in the recent years. With Daniel Bryan now, arguably, the best all-round superstar in WWE, and CM Punk producing some of the best work seen in WWE in years, this match could top the Lesnar vs Angle Iron Man from Smackdown in 2003.

And what better place to let these two men show what they can do, than the biggest stage of them all. Give Bryan and Punk an hour to show what they can do, and I guarantee, it could be the best Wrestlemania match since the HBK-Taker saga. I don’t think, if it were to happen next year in New Orleans, that it would be for the WWE Title, but it would have the ability to hold the audience’s attention for 60 minutes.

30 Minutes

It is certain that The Shield will split up at some point in the future. In my opinion, these two guys hold the most potential within the group, and a feud between the two would be mind blowing. A feud could reach a climax at Summerslam next year, where a defeat in an Iron Man Match, which if good enough, could see both men come out of the feud looking strong.

One thing to say about these two men is that they have the pedigree to put on a good match with anyone. They even made Ryback look good at the turn of the year. Rollins has experience of Iron Man matches also, as he was the first ever FCW 15 Champion, a short lived belt that revolved around 15 minute matches. And both men are part of a generation of Independent superstars who built reputations around long matches. This would be another classic.

20 Minutes

TNA’s Knockout division has been superb in recent months, and AJ Lee and Kaitlyn have managed to raise standards in the WWE Divas division. Both women have had matches that have shown off their talent, and credit to the WWE production staff for giving them the chance to show what they can do.

Their feud has been, arguably, the best Divas feud in WWE since Trish Stratus vs Lita, and the opportunity for a 20 minute Iron ‘Woman’ match would showcase the talents of these two young women. It would also be the first televised Women’s Iron Man Match in history, and it would be a candidate for the best Diva’s match ever.
