Royal Rumble 2007: Preview of a Legendary Saga

Most of the Royal Rumble matches have been solid over the last decade, but few actually witnessed what could be a dream match by itself during the Royal Rumble match. As participants eliminated one another, two men were left in the ring; Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker. The two would fight another few minutes before the Deadman prevailed. He went on to capture the World Heavyweight Championship for the 1st time (5th world title) against Batista at WrestleMania 23, which also marked his 15th win at WrestleMania and kept his streak intact. Shawn Michaels on the other hand, was still able to main event WrestleMania 23 but lost to John Cena in an epic match for the WWE Championship.

Two years later, Shawn Michaels would challenge The Undertaker for a match at the 25th anniversary of WrestleMania. Following a historic bout that stole the show, The Undertaker won via pinfall after reversing HBK’s Moonsault into a Tombstone Piledriver. The following WrestleMania, Taker accepted a second challenge with the condition that Michaels has to retire if he loses, which gave us yet another historic battle. Both matches were voted as “Match of the Year”  by Pro Wrestling Illustrated (PWI) in 2009 and 2010, respectively.

Other than that, the PPV also featured three title matches. The first saw Bobby Lashley retain his ECW Championship against Test, whereas Ken Kennedy lost his only major WWE title opportunity to date for Batista’s World Heavyweight Championship. Finally, Umaga’s monster push was halted by Cena in a Last Man Standing match for the WWE Championship.

That’s it for this weekend! Come back next Wednesday for another installment of the Countdown to Royal Rumble.
