Hello and welcome to the Countdown to Elimination Chamber! As we get closer to the 2013 edition of the WWE PPV, we take a look at some legendary Elimination Chamber matches. Tonight’s match was the first Elimination Chamber in history and dates back to 2002.
Countdown to WWE Elimination Chamber 2013: 2 Days
Survivor Series 2002: One last ride
Few months after coming back from a 4 year hiatus due to his back injury, Shawn Michaels was in the middle of an intense “personal” storyline with Triple H. A week after SummerSlam, where Shawn Michaels made his in-ring return and beat The Game in an Unsanctioned match, Eric Bischoff unveiled the new World Heavyweight Championship and awarded it to Triple H. The Game would defend his title against several wrestlers the following months. As Survivor Series was getting close, the freshly-established brand extension resulted in a fierce competition between RAW and Smackdown’s two General Managers. Eric Bischoff, in order to overshadow Smackdown’s Hell in a Cell match between Brock Lesnar and Undertaker at No Mercy, invented a new gimmick match based on the Royal Rumble and the Hell in a Cell concepts. The Elimination Chamber was born.
At Survivor Series, Triple H would defend his title against Chris Jericho, Kane, Rob Van Dam, Booker T and Shawn Michaels. HBK, who was sidelined by Triple H’s assault after their SummerSlam match, made his return later that same night by ambushing The Game and therefore confirming his participation. During the Elimination Chamber match, Shawn Michaels eliminated Triple H last and captured his first World Heavyweight Championship. That win gave him his 4th and last world title and, on a side note, unleashed the screams and cheers of the Madison Square Garden crowd like never before.
Shawn Michaels’ reign as World Heavyweight Champion did not last long, though. One month later at Armageddon, HBK lost to Triple H in a Three Stages of Hell match. The three bouts consisted of a Street Fight won by Triple H, a Steel Cage match won by Shawn Michaels, and a Ladder match that allowed Triple H to win back his World Heavyweight Championship for the second time.
